The Dark Academy on Korriban

Layne was unwilling to go to sleep. Being bunked together with others meant she'd almost certainly be sleeping during the day, when the others wouldn't be around. It just felt safer that way.

So rather than being in her bed, she could be found in the ship's mess hall, grabbing herself whatever food was available.

Hunger pulled her out of bed. Niriti couldn't sleep. The excitement, the worries of back in Korriban, the dangers coming ahead in Yavin... Niriti crawled into the dinning hall where the lights were still on although the room was practically empty.

Some non-descript item of food was in the process of being inserted into her mouth right as her eyes noticed Niriti enter. The sight produced a feeling that there was something... what was it... something that... something or something...

...

...oh right, she'd overheard someone say something about a teacher wanting to kill Layne... according to Niriti. Or something.

She swallowed the mouthful of food, all the while staring at the other girl.

"Sit," she said, once she was able to speak.

Niriti was startled by the sudden imperative order of Layne, but she stayed put in her place, eyeing the woman with curiosity. Then she reached out to grab some fruit and stood opposite to Layne on the table biting into her fruit piece.

"Can I help you with something." She asked with wondering look in her eyes.

"Or don't sit. Whatever," she rolled her eyes.

"So you made it through the tombs today, huh?"

"Yeah, well. I passed the exam, that I did for sure." She rolled her eyes as she gave another bite to the fruit. She hadn't really gone into the tombs, but she had a free pass from the teacher, so it worked out well for her. "How did you do?"

"I found the relic and everything. It was easy."

Well, it wasn't really all that easy...but she'd managed it somehow.

"So now that we've bonded over shared exam difficulties..." she took a small sip of water. "...you've been running your mouth off."

"What!!" She was outraged. "What do you mean?! OH!" Niriti, shocked, remembered then what word had been going on around the school that day. "You mean that thing they were saying about you being the target of some teacher? Somebody probably heard us talking the other day. Somebody who wanted to get me into trouble with you."

Despite her attempt of sincerity, Layne wasn't buying it.

"You're a pretty terrible liar. Anyway, I don't really care that you're going around telling people something that's already pretty obvious to begin with. What I want to know is, why?"

"What lie?" she continued. She hadn't been able to charm Layne, but then again nobody else in school had been able to. So it wasn't something that worried Niriti at all. "Listen, I already told you that someone must have heard us. And it doesn't help that you stormed into the dinner party of the Academy either."

"We didn't really talk though. All that happened was you tried and failed to get me to work for you. Nobody would hear that and then feel compelled to make up a story about how you're going around saying one of the teachers wants me dead."

She stuck another piece of... chicken? ...into her mouth; as she tried talking and chewing at the same time.

"Doesn't it make more sense that you were angry at my refusal and ineptly tried to get back at me by scaring me with a story about someone wanting to kill me?"

"I did not want you working for me." This time she was really affected by the thoughts of Layne. "If I wanted someone to work for me, I'd have someone more understanding. Maybe just even hired person, since it makes things easier." Niriti left the fruit on the table, her hunger had suddenly died.

"She really thought I wanted her to help me? As if I didn't have already many helping hands in the Academy, she thought that I would want her!? Outrageous!"

"You do realize you're using your outside voice, right?" She asked as Niriti started rambling about Layne like she wasn't right there.

"Besides, you literally said you wanted to hire my services."

"I remember well what I said, Layne, I said that I didn't want you as an ally. That in any case I would prefer to hire you, since I could not expect you to be loyal to anything but yourself." Seems like the former slave was used to being required by everyone, a special need to her own ego, probably. "Next time you should get your facts right before making assumptions."

"Whatever makes you sleep at night, I guess."

She finished the chicken-chewing and swallowed, then pointed her fork at the girl.

"You're just distracting from the issue. Why'd you go and spread those rumors? And don't try to pass it off as someone else's work, because that just doesn't make any sense."

"Well, whatever you want to believe, then go with it." She replied "You've already made up your mind, so there is not much I can do about that. And I'm not gonna go and apologize for something that I didn't do." This time around, Niriti seemed convincing enough in her continuous allegation.

"Whatever," she said. "I already told you I don't really care if someone goes around telling people what everyone already knows anyway. It's just weird, s'all."

She wasn't sure whether to believe Niriti. She'd sure seemed like she was lying earlier, after all.

But, it really didn't matter. Everyone had known Thaine had it out for Layne. It was no big secret or anything.

"Yeah, I had already heard about the thoughts of some teachers in your regard. But I have much too much to think about other than being worried about what is said or done about you." Her many worries passed by her mind, all the things that had kept her awake and none of them had been rumors of her talking about Layne. "Since the last time we spoke we haven't even gotten in each others way. And now I think that was the best way, since all we do is collide whenever we meet."

"And?"

She proceeded to shovel more chicken into her mouth.

"I collide with lots of people. Not my problem though."

"And it's not worth my time to lose it in any way on you. And I've thought that way since day 1."

"If you say so," she said, in between chewing. "I ain't keeping you."
