What use does it have without a crystal? The idea is that free mod takes the place of the crystal and then you have to modify it further to make space for the crystal?

I think your confusing mod and attachment. Mods are something that are done to attachments. Attachments are things that take up hard points. You get to add one free mod to your crystal before putting it in. Or if you have another attachment to put in your lightsaber you could mod that for free. Crystals are attachments for lightsabers.

I saw this in the book but not quite sure how it works. Some Force Powers have increases to an Ability like Agility but says ongoing effect commit Force die. So do we need to roll Force in order to determine that we have this boost to stats? Or does boosting the stat pretty much leaves us with no Force points left to do anything else since we are still Force Rating 1?

The latter, committing a Force die means you have the power active but cannot roll Force if you have no force dice left.

She used Sense and committed a die and then could not roll Force Powers unless she stopped committing the die.

Yep, then you can roll force, if you get Force rating 2 you can commit one die and still roll one die to Force thingies.
